Our home area |
The
club’s base is located in Bad Mitterndorf, Styria, Austria. Bad Mitterndorf is
a small town situated between the mountain ranges Totes Gebirge and Dachstein.
Most of the area is a nature reserve. For cave visits are permits required.
The
area of our club, in which we do most of our explorations and also maintain the
official cave register (Höhlenkataster) does almost fit to the political area
of „Steirisches Salzkammergut“ a part of upper Styria. It encloses most of
the Totes Gebirge (Großer Priel: 2500 m) and the Styrian part of the Dachstein
(Hoher Dachstein 2995 m). Due to historical development of the cave registration
some parts across the border in Upper Austria are still in our register whereas
some parts of Styria, e.g. the mountain Raucher, where Raucherkarhöhle is
located, is under the cave register of the upper Austrian club in Linz.
The
mountains in the area are mostly of high alpine karst, particularly of Triassic
limestone. Cave systems with partly very deep shafts are typical. The entrances
to the caves are normally located between 500 and 2500 meter above sea level.
